Meet one of our DemTech Sprint Experts, Tatev Khachatryan!

What better way to understand the connection between Democracy and Tech, than to join our DemTech Sprint where you’ll have the chance to learn from Tatev Khachatryan, a UI/UX designer who also has 12 years of experience working in protecting children’s rights.

While Tatev didn’t start off her career as a UI/UX designer, her journey has given her all the necessary experiences and skills to work in DemTech:

“My first expertise is in social work—I am a social policy specialist. For 12 years I have worked in protecting children’s rights, but I have also always been interested in design, I have even worked in sewing and designing clothing and had my own atelier.”

Her creativity doesn’t stop there; Tatev has also produced screen prints. Soon after she began screen printing, she realized that she really liked visual design:

“When I was looking into what I should learn and focus on in the world of design, I found UI/UX design. I also realized that it was related to my educational background – I graduated from the Faculty of Sociology and UI/UX incorporates everything that I learned in sociology, so I thought it would be perfect.”

To make her dreams a reality, she started to teach herself UI/UX design and got really good at it. She got a couple internships in the tech sector, worked with mentors, and took Google courses along the way. It’s been two years since she started working in this field and is led by her desire to continue to grow her skills.

“I felt something was missing, so I applied to several universities and got accepted to the User Experience Management program in Germany, where I will be a student in October.”

What connection do you see between democracy and UI/UX?

“I think design is something that is connected to every field. But in this DemTech Sprint, it’s especially related for me because I started off as a human rights expert and so for me, it’s a very interesting project. In Armenia we have a lot of gaps in children’s protection and human rights, and tech can help us find these gaps in order to work with the government and other organizations to try and fix them.”

This is only one connection of how democracy and tech are related. Join our DemSprint to make your own connections between the two.

Just to remind you, DemTech Sprint is a 5-week software sprint, where participants will work with experts in human rights, democracy, technology, UI/UX, and more, to create tech solutions centered around and in the promotion of democratic practices and principles.
